Rehabilitation of the Kirkuk-Baghdad-Diyala Road - Projects for the entrances to the capital..

The eastern part was subjected to rocket attacks, resulting in damages including the collapse of three spans, two of which fell entirely into the waters of the Shatt al-Arab (9, 10), while the eighth span from the eastern side fell into the waters of the Shatt al-Arab. The western side remained attached to the rest of the bridge, causing the bridge to shift longitudinally by one meter and laterally by 5 cm. There was also a subsidence in the surface of the bridge in some affected areas, and parts of both the upper and lower surfaces of the bridge collapsed, as well as the lateral side of the box girder in the seventh span between the piers.

Therefore, the bridge had to be repositioned and raised to its level, with a length of 255 meters and a weight of 10,000 tons, using specialized imported equipment and foreign expertise secured in all disciplines. The damaged spans were reconstructed, each 177 meters in length, to the same specifications as the original bridge. This involved casting pre-stressed box segments of specified lengths according to the consulting design, which were gradually post-tensioned together to form the final bridge structure.

Additionally, the casting of the eleventh and twelfth segments was completed, and the old spans were connected to the new ones. Load testing was carried out in the area, with a total load of 420 tons applied.
