Construction of the second bridge for the entrance road to As-Suwaira on the Tigris River

Client

Ministry of Reconstruction, Housing, Municipalities, and Public Works

Location

Iraq – As-Suwaira

Rehabilitation of Highway Part 1 / Lane 5 from Hilla to Diwaniyah

Due to the damage to the old concrete Rustumiya Bridge caused by excessive loads and the bombardment it was subjected to, as well as its significance as a gateway connecting the capital Baghdad to the southern provinces, and due to the impossibility of closing it for maintenance, the construction of the second parallel concrete Rustumiya Bridge was initiated as part of the Baghdad – Basra entrance project. This was to facilitate traffic diversion onto it in addition to the existing iron bridges.

The work includes reconstructing the surface of the bridge, adding four additional spans, demolishing the damaged concrete parts, installing pre-cast concrete piers as replacements for the previous iron piers, and increasing the height of the concrete structure to achieve balance with the new second concrete Rustumiya Bridge. The aim is to reduce the traffic congestion at this crossing point and facilitate the movement and transition of vehicles.
